Flightless Fruit Flies | Buy Live Cultures

Live fruit flies are a great option for feeding small lizards and many species of frogs, especially because of their reproduction cycle. Each culture of flightless fruit flies has a lifespan of about one month, and even after they die they will continually pupate from eggs laid by the adults in the culture! This will allow you to keep fruit flies for a while, as long as they are taken care of accurately. Regular fruit flies should be kept at 70 - 75 degrees and giant fruit flies should be kept at 78 - 83 degrees. If the culture is not stored at an appropriate temperature, it could possibly mold. The flies have everything they need inside of the container they are shipped in; just feed to your animal as needed! Buy flightless fruit flies from us today!

We advise that the customer should never remove all of the fruit flies from the Fruit Fly Culture, a few should be left in the vial for breeders. This will increase the lifespan of the vial and result in the need to buy fruit flies less often.

  • Each Live Flightless Fruit Fly Culture contains 40-50 medium adult flies.
  • Cultures should be stored at room temperature and kept out of direct sunlight.
Regular fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are about 1/16"
Giant fruit flies (Drosphila hydei) are about 1/8"

FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS:

Gently tap the top of the culture to knock the fruit flies to the bottom. Remove cover and shake out the desired amount. It is recommended that you dust your flies with a vitamin supplement such as Fluker's Repta-Calcium or Fluker's Repta-Vitamin prior to feeding them to your pet.

Which shipping method should I choose? We offer a wide variety of options for shipping your live insects. Using the chart above as reference, our customers can choose which shipping service will work best for them. It is important to take into account that transit times vary greatly between the different options. USPS First Class Mail can take up to 7 business days and Fedex Overnight is a one business day in transit service. What works well for some customers will not always work well for others. If it is during the hot summer months or cold winter months we recommend not using USPS First Class Mail because it is the slowest option and increases the risk of receiving your insects DOA. Make sure to check the weather, carefully taking into account transit time and places that your package will travel through. Also important to consider is the price between the shipping methods: USPS First Class Mail is the cheapest, Fedex Priority Overnight is the most expensive with many options in between. We try to provide as much information as possible but it is ultimately up to the customer to make the best choice based on weather and the quality of delivery services available to your area.

Live Delivery Guarantee Winter

Fluker Farms guarantees live delivery when temperatures are as low as 16 degrees at the destination and/or regional sort facilities. While most fruit fly growers simply refuse to ship at temperatures below this threshold, Fluker Farms recognizes how much you rely on live insect for your pet’s nourishment and feel you should have a choice in the matter. Therefore, we provide the following options when the weather drops to 0-15 degrees (we will not ship to any areas below 0 degrees).

1) Ship Without Guarantee (SWG)-You can choose to have your fruit flies shipped when the night time temperatures are between 0-15 degrees by selecting the SWG option, however, we cannot guarantee live delivery and NO REFUND will be given for insects that do not arrive alive.

2) Hold For Weather (HFW)-If you choose the HFW option, your order may be held up to 7 days while we wait on improved shipping conditions. If after 7 days the weather doesn’t improve enough for your order to be shipped, it will be cancelled and any charges refunded.

For your convenience we offer a variety of shipping methods. Please choose the method that is best suited for the conditions in your area. Keep in mind that although Fluker Farms will replace any crickets that do not arrive alive (subject to the extreme weather policy outlined above), Fluker Farms DOES NOT guarantee any shipping charges. All shipping charges are final and non refundable. Please inspect your packages upon delivery and contact us immediately with any problems. All live insect claims must be made within 2 business days of delivery. To request a claim, please log in to your account to view order history and request a refund for the order in question. All claims will be processed within 2 business days.

Go to Shipping Advisory to see if there are any advisories for your area. States listed in red currently have night-time temperatures of 15 degrees (F) or below: If you have any questions or concerns related to your state or our shipping policy please feel free to contact us or call (800) 735-8537.

    What a rip off

Posted by Santos perez on Apr 2nd 2024

You guys should put a giant sized disclaimer on the description and tell people that these are 2-3 inch vials of FF. Never again! I can get 32oz from other sites for the same price and get way more than the crap I received. I picked the giant option and they appear to be melanogaster flies. Absolutely horrible!

    This is a 2" vial

Posted by Ashley Shannon on Jan 14th 2023

Just FYI this is a tiny 3" vial with around 50 living flies. I will NEVER order from here again. One point for arriving alive, -4 points for misleading product page which does not mention a vial size ANYWHERE. You can go to a big box pet store and get triple the product for the same price without paying shipping. Never again.

    FLIGHTLESS fruit flies

Posted by Tara Luster on Dec 10th 2021

If you’re ordering flightless bugs, I feel like it’s completely fair to expect them to be, in fact, flightless. Unfortunately, that is not the case with this culture. Every fruit fly in this has wings. My poor baby gecko is unable to hunt these due to them being able to fly away. This is incredibly disappointing, and I will not be purchasing from Fluker’s again.

    Flightless Fruit Flies Culture

Posted by Beverly Rakes on Dec 2nd 2021

I ordered a fruit fly culture for my little jumping spider and I'm so pleased with what I received. There are so many flies (especially compared to what I got at my local pet store) and it only took 3 days from the time I placed the order till they showed up in my mailbox. Will definitely order again.

    hit or miss

Posted by Heather Ridgeway on Oct 23rd 2021

Last order died fast with no babies. Large fruit flies had mites. Now the site doesn't allow me to purchase fruit flies, not sure what's going on.

    always have mites

Posted by Ashley Davis on May 23rd 2020

I've bought 3 tubes of these at different times and they always have mites and dry out super fast. I've contacted support about the issue and their "fruit fly guy looked at them, he said he didn't know what that was. He hasn't had any mite problems back there". Go elsewhere for healthy FF cultures.

    Fruit fly culture

Posted by Marlaina Junior on Jun 21st 2019

This is an update on my previous review, which, unfortunately, for some reason, was never posted. So, even though all the flies died within 6 days of receiving the culture, some of the larvae have hatched and I have a nice new supply of flies. And there are more 'babies' waiting to be born. I updated my rating to 5 stars because of this. No, it's not a big vial. If you need to feed these flies in abundance, you need a bigger culture. But I have to say, I am quite pleased that I have a continuous supply for my nymph mantises. Do not throw the culture away when the flies die. If you look at the sides of the vial, you will see tiny, white oval shaped 'eggs'. In a couple of days they will turn black and then hatch in about 4 days.
